Portraiture – Part 2

Introduction

For this project, I would like to photograph members of the public that work in the public sector. I will walk about the streets of Lincoln with my camera and politely ask to photograph certain people who are doing their job whatever that may be.

To execute this successfully, I will need to consider the angle in which the photograph is taken from to help show what the people in the photograph do as an occupation. This can be done by highlighting more of the environment that the photograph is taking from.

The Bookseller

(Above) this photograph was taken of a bookseller who works in Lindum Books at the top of Steep hill in Lincoln. Analysing the photograph on face value, you can see a lady who is looking down at her broadsheet magazine, slightly smiling at the page. In the background of the photograph there is a tree with leaves and an owl sitting on one of the branches. There is also what looks to be a small mouse also standing on a branch to the left of the main tree trunk. In the foreground of the photograph, you can see a lot of different pieces of clutter which indicate that the lady is sitting at a desk. The pieces of clutter include; pencils, a mobile phone, pieces of paper, a laptop, pointing mouse and a charity tin for the poppy appeal. On the left of the photograph, there are different book spines standing on a shelf. The lady in the photograph is slightly off centre creating a more balanced composition throughout the scene.

The front cover of the magazine that the lady is reading is titled ‘THE BOOKSELLER’. This gives a clearer concept into what the occupation is of the lady in the photograph. The lady in the photograph is a bookseller.

How I went about approaching the lady in the image, asking whether it would be okay to take her photograph, I explained that I was at the University of Lincoln studying Media Production and that one of our modules was photography. I explained what I wanted achieve out of the photographs that I had been taking which was to show what the occupation of the person in the photograph is. She authorised my request to take a photograph. I then asked if it was possible for her to be looking down at her magazine that she was originally reading, producing a natural pose rather than a direct pose into the camera.

I personally like the photograph because of how it shows directly what the occupation of the lady in the photograph is.

Lincoln castle

(Above) in the photograph you can see a lady to the right of the frame gazing past the camera into the distance. In the background, you can see a tree and a high brick wall. As this is the final image, the colours in the photograph are very vibrant. You can also see lots of detail in the ladies face bringing out more of the character in the photograph.

The lady is wearing a red jumper with a blue in liner. You can also see that she is also wearing a blue neck scarf which has the words ‘LINCOLN CASTLE’ printed on it. Below the scarf of the left side of her jumper is a name badge which says ‘Margret’ on it. The blue scarf, name badge and background of the photograph all signify that Margret works for Lincoln Castle.

In my opinion, I like the photograph because of the composition and how well you are able to see what the occupation the person does in the photograph.
